Advocating for walkways/cycleways in east Rodney
pacer.pathway@gmail.com
2012
The PACER Trust reached a significant milestone recently. The trust is a vehicle to build on the momentum of the Matakana/Omaha/Point Wells walkway/cycleway projects, and its primary aim is to extend that pathway to access all communities of East Rodney, from Warkworth to Leigh.
As soon as the Matakana Fruitloop fundraiser was cleared up last month, Scott McCallum turned his energies back to the construction of Stage 2 of the Matakana Community Group’s project.
At the February business meeting, the Rodney Local Board declined the invitation for one of its members to be appointed to the PACER Trust Board.
Construction of the next section of the Matakana to Omaha/Point Wells pathway started in a fairly low-key manner this month with the installation of two culverts.
So “how” do we go about getting this proposed pathway, from Leigh to Warkworth including Snells Beach, developed? Based on experience elsewhere in NZ, the answer is through a Council-community partnership in which each has a clear role and a shared goal.
2011
There are many potential benefits that could accrue from connecting our communities with a system of walkway/cycleways, but it’s helpful to summarise some of the more obvious.
With all the recent festivities and focus on rugby, you could start to believe that is all that New Zealanders have recreation time for. However, through many parts of the country, there has been a huge development of cycleways and/or walkways and a parallel rise in their use by new converts and old stalwarts alike.
