A group of keen walkers has been ‘walking the talk’ by steadily creating a network of tracks around Mangawhai Village and the Heads.
Thanks to the efforts of these men (pictured) and others including Don Goldschimdt and Idwals Leese, it is now possible to walk from Cheviot Street to the surf club, via tracks and the beach which link to the start of the cliff top walkway.
Paul Freeman says the walkway, which affords spectacular views and meanders through stands of native bush, is receiving acclaim worldwide.
“It is mentioned in several publications, including the most recent Lonely Planet guide to New Zealand,” he says. “American author Scott Cook describes the walk as one of the best in North Island.”
Resting after completing a further 600m of walkway linking the Wood St reserve with Findlay Street are Ted Farrell, Paul Freeman, Mike Robinson and Gordon Hosking.
