Leigh Fishing competition supports charities

The sixth Leigh Fishing Competition will be held on Saturday, February 21, and up to 300 people are expected to take part.

Organiser Jackie Woolerton says proceeds of the event will go to the Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade and to other local charities.

The day should be a busy one for fishers, with starting time 3am. They must have their catches in to the Leigh Hall for the weigh in by 5pm, after which participants can enjoy a hangi. The fire brigade will run a bar and there will be a sausage sizzle, raffles and lolly scramble and bouncy castle for the children. Leigh’s fire engine will be on display.

There are many categories to enter, for senior fishers 15 years and over, and junior fishers under 15 years old, with prizes for all. The largest snapper by weight will win someone a cash prize of $1000 and $500 is up for grabs for the average snapper. Donated goods make up the other prizes. All senior participants go into at draw for the big prize – an inflatable dingy with motor, worth $3000.

Contestants are asked to donate their catches for an auction after the event.
Tickets are available at Warkworth Hunting and Fishing (McCoy Thomas Sports), Warkworth Boat and Fishing Centre, Matakana ITM, Leigh Motors and Leigh General Store.

“We are still looking for sponsors and volunteers,” Jackie says.
