Annual Wellsford road race on the horizon

The George Heaven Road Race, hosted by the Wellsford Road Runners will be held on Sunday, April 5.

Participants can run or walk the 5.5km event, with the emphasis on participation. There are various classes, and lots of trophies, cups and prizes up for grabs.

Wellsford Push Play Neighbourhood coordinator Julie Knott says last year’s race attracted more than 120 entrants, with the oldest participant being a remarkable 84 years young, and with 42 people trying the race for the first time.

“There are lots of health benefits,” she says. “Walking can increase energy, and mood enhancing hormones that stimulate the immune system, improve muscle strength and posture, and increase oxygen intake and blood flow which can improve brain functions such as logic, planning and memory.”

Organisers are also hoping to recruit some additional volunteers to help as marshals on the day. If you would like to volunteer, contact Julie on 423 7495.

Here’s a suggested training schedule for beginners to put you in the right shape to participate in the walk:

5 &6 Week – 5 days with two hills, 45 minutes
7 &8 Week – 5 days, 2 hills & low impact, 30 minutes
No training the day before the walk/run event
