Kaipara Flats principal appointedBoard of Trustees chairwoman Judie Edward-Pancoust says there was great interest in the position from all over New Zealand. She expects Mr Lockie to build on what has recently been achieved in the school in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). “He’s strong in ICT, maths and sport,” she says. Mr Lockie, originally from Australia, has been teaching in NZ since 1996, starting with intermediate school positions in Auckland, deputy principal at Parakai School and then assistant principal at Warkworth. In 2007 he became the school’s deputy principal. His passion for teaching was aroused when he became a camp counsellor in the United States in 1994, and discovered how much he enjoyed interacting with children from different backgrounds. Key to his vision for his new school will be developing the literacy and numeracy skills of his students, while integrating ITC as a tool into all facets of the curriculum. “I also want to make sure we cater for everyone, so that all children can succeed in the area of their choice,” he says. “That may be a challenge in a smaller school, as small schools have fewer resources.” Mr Lockie plays for the Forrest Hill over 35s soccer team and is a member of the junior committee of the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club, where he coaches the juniors. He is also a member of the Orewa North School Board of Trustees, where his wife Madeleine teaches. The family lives in Orewa. Cameron Lockie helps Warkworth Primary School student George Swift, 10, with her batting technique. |
