Hoteo Hall restoration gains support A small group of enthusiasts is determined to see Hoteo North Hall return to being the focus of the tiny farming community, west of Wellsford.Fundraising is underway for renovations to the kauri building, which cost £290 to build in 1883. It served as a school until 1940, having a roll of 34 during its heyday. Adjoining the school were tennis courts, a post office and library building. A grant from Rodney District Council has been received for refurbishment of this building. Ownership of the building – previously in the hands of Council – passed to the Hoteo North School Society in 2003, with the landowners, DOC, leasing the grounds back to the society for a peppercorn rental. The 40 acres surrounding the hall are leased to former school pupil and farmer Gordon Levet to defray annual costs. Recently, committee members Linda Macdonald and Caroline and Keith Marshall unearthed the original plans and tender document for the construction of the hall, while researching its history for inclusion in the book Historic Halls of Small Town New Zealand. An architectural survey was undertaken to assess the historical significance of the building, which will assist the group in applying for grants to continue restoration work. Re-wiring, a new kitchen and the installation of a sprinkler system are top priorities. The hall committee is planning a craft fair, on August 15, from 10am, with proceeds going towards maintenance costs.
