Bonnington takes the cupFor the first time in three years, the weather gods were kind and players enjoyed sun on their backs during the entire event. The greens were ‘fast’ with the course in emaculate condition. Mangawhai club member Lee Newman set the pace with a fine 71, followed by a 74 to lead Brad Bonnington 72, 75 after the first days play. The wind got up on the second day and made scoring difficult with Brad scoring 77 in the final round to clinch the major prize and the Tom Bonnington Cup, dontated by his grandfather. It was typical of Mangawhai’s reputation with only a handful of players breaking 80 over the three rounds. Local players Vaughan Tito won the first division nett on 220 and Jacob Hassall the second divison with 211. The tournament also acted as a trial for the Masters with Bob Shirley taking the honours.
