Pest fish discovered at Lake Tomarata
The suspected discovery of illegally-introduced koi carp in Lake Tomarata has left Auckland Regional Council officials “shocked and extremely disappointed”.
Group manager monitoring and research Grant Barnes says he was well aware of the problem in nearby Lake Spectacle, but was sceptical when Northern Matters contacted him for comment on the Lake Tomarata situation.
In a return phone call an hour later, Mr Barnes said he was very disappointed to confirm that the carp were indeed in the lake.

District plans draws differing views
Kaipara’s proposed District Plan was debated from both sides of the development-versus-environment divide at a gathering at the Maungaturoto Community Centre on November 5.
Forest and Bird North Island conservation manager Mark Bellingham and Mangawhai developer Mark Rowbotham shared their quite different perspectives on the plan, which is currently out for public comment.
Mayor Neil Tiller opened the evening by explaining that a fundamental change in the new plan was the shift to an effects-based plan with a list of ‘performance standards’, rather than the former ‘permitted activities’ approach.

Wellsford set to get a library in the park
Friends of the Wellsford Library are delighted that Rodney District Council has chosen War Memorial Park as the best site for their proposed new facility.
About 10 library supporters attended last month’s meeting of Council’s strategy and community meeting to lend weight to discussions about where the new $2.5m building should go.
The community favoured the park site over the alternatives, which were to rebuild on the present library site or build a new library next to the community centre, in Matheson Road.
