Little town of lights attempts guiness world record

Kaiwaka will attempt a NZ record when it stages a Wearable Arts Moonlight Walk on Friday, November 6.

The walk will start from the Kaiwaka Sports Complex at 7.30pm and is one of the Kaiwaka 150th Celebrations grand finale events.

An organiser Beverly Stewart says the idea is based on the Wearable Arts concept, but has been adapted to fit Kaiwaka’s reputation as The little Town of Lights.

“To add further interest we will be attempting to set a Guinness world record for the most number of people wearing lights,” she says. “The only rules are that all walkers must be wearing something that lights up and all lights must be safety approved LED lights.”

Registration will take place at the Sports Complex where walkers will make their way to the finish in Jaques carpark where there will be live music, food and wine while the judging and counting are completed.

There will be prizes for each category including Isa Dambeck jewellery from Germany, Firejewel necklaces from America, vouchers and a hand-crafted quilt made and donated by Kerry McKenzie called ‘The Little Town Of Lights’.

The celebrations will continue on November 7 with an historical display at the Kaiwaka Memorial Hall, a quilt display at the Apple Basket and discussions with Peter Harris on his new book Passport to Eutopia. The Stories Tall, Stories Short, Kaiwaka 1959 - 2009 book launch at Kaiwaka Memorial Hall at 5pm.

Sunday celebrations will start with a Remembrance Service at the Kaiwaka Cemetery, led by Tony Hargreaves, starting at 1pm.

The Cockies & Blockies versus Allcomers 20/20 cricket match will be held at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex from 2pm. Alex Tait will be in attendance, and there will also be Bat Down Cricket and a Softball Pitching Machine.

The weekend will end with a BYO barbecue at the sports complex at 5pm.
The final celebration event will be the Kaiwaka 150th Celebration Ball on November 14. For bookings, phone Lindsey on 431 2045.
