First female Lions Club member in Wellsford“It’s no big deal,” she says. “I’ve been involved with the Lions since (husband) Steve joined several years ago. The only difference now is that I can have my say and don’t have to rely on Steve to get my ideas across. After all, behind every Lion there’s usually a hard-working woman.” Steve, who was president of Wellsford Lions for two years, agrees. “She’s always been tremendously supportive and hard-working, particularly when we organised our 40th anniversary a couple of years ago, and at Christmas when we host a huge party in our barn,” he says. “It will be great to have her on board as a paid up member and we hope that other women will follow her lead.” The club currently has 23 members, but is keen to attract more members. The Levets, who run an agricultural contracting business, say that the Lions Club is now the sole remaining service club in the town. “Lions is great way to have fun and to get to know your neighbours, while giving something back to the community,” they say. The club started in 1966 with 35 founder members. Over the years, it has been involved in numerous charity fundraising events and supports local events, as well as financially assisting some local individuals to achieve important personal goals. Lions come from all walks of life, including business people, farmers, contractors and retirees. The club meets twice a month, at 7.30 pm. Info: Phone president Ross Cave on 423 7140 or secretary F.
