Mangawhai fishermen concede defeat
Mangawhai Boating Club is licking its wounds after being out-fished in the twice-annual Waipu/Managawhai Fishing Challenge.
Club president Trevor Downey says Mangawhai lost the trophy by just 300 grams. “We mostly win it so it was only fair that we gave them a go,” he says. The winners are the ones who pull in the two heaviest snapper. This year, the heaviest snapper weighed in at just over eight kilograms. “There’s a fierce rivalry between the two clubs, but at the end of the day there was plenty of socialising and time to talk about the one that got away.” The next event on the club calendar is the annual Start of Season competition which will be held on Labour Weekend Sunday, October 25. Members and other interested fishermen are welcome. For details, call into the club in Alamar Road, the Mangawhai Service Centre or the Tackle Shop at the Heads. A Ladies Fishing Day and Take a Kid Fishing Day will be held in November. Trevor says the fishing has been good lately, with plenty of snapper around, as well as trevally and even kingfish. |
