“Over the moon” was how Wellsford Rugby Club president Glen Wetherill described players and supporters after Wellsford’s nail-biting win in the final against Mid Western, played at the Maungakaramea Domain, near Whangarei, last month. The team bought home the coveted Joe Morgan Memorial Trophy in the Southern Districts Premier final, beating Mid Western 23-21. “While we dominated much of the game, we were 21-11 down with 10 minutes to go. A late try, scored and converted by Matthew Wright, gave us the game.” The win was made all the sweeter by having previously suffered four semi-final defeats. Glen estimated the crowd on the day at about 3000. “It was thrilling rugby and the celebrations were long and hard,” he said. Try scorers for Wellsford were Paddy-Joe Atkins, Matthew Wright and Ross Wright.
