A small mob of nine dairy cattle turned up on Steve and Andrea Orchard’s Brown Road farm, at Kaiwaka, about three weeks ago and are as yet unclaimed.
The couple has run adverts in several newspapers and put up notices in local stores in a bid to return the cattle to their rightful owners.
“They are a bit of a mixed bunch, with assorted or no tags,” Steve says. “Most of them are rising three-year-olds and look like they’ve been in the bush for a while. We’d like to get them back to their owner.”
Despite a few enquiries, including calls from two Tomarata farmers who have had stock stolen, so far no-one has claimed the mob.
“They’d been walking up and down the gas pipeline when I came across them. It’s just faintly possible that they could be ours, as we lost some a year or so back shortly after we bought them and before we tagged them, but I’m not sure. If no-one comes forward soon I’m afraid they’ll be knocked on the head.”
