Applications to adopt a Kaimanawa horse from the annual muster this month close on Saturday, May 15.
Around 130 horses will be removed from the Central North Island high country during the Department of Conservation muster and the Kaimanawa Wild Horse Welfare Trust is looking for homes for about 100 of them.
This year’s muster could be the last large scale one, as the use of an immuno-contraceptive is expected to manage wild horse numbers in future. No muster is scheduled for 2011.
Simone Frewin, of Paparoa, is responsible for re-homing the horses this year. She says the Trust aims to place horses straight from the muster.
Kaimanawas make perfect pony club mounts, with jumping ability and a talent for mounted games. They have a calm temperament, great attitude and are ideal for children and small adults.
The ponies cost $200 which includes transport from Waiouru to Huntly, registration, drench, a rebate towards gelding, and a year’s membership of the KWHWT.
Prospective members are checked by the Trust. If you don’t have land or live in the city it’s possible to sponsor a pony.
