Albertland - then and now
by Marjorie Proctor, Albertland Museum
1862 saw the arrival of our ancestors with all their hopes and ambitions for life in a new society, a new land, a new beginning. They were shortly to be disillusioned with little that they encountered measuring up to expectations. But, for those who committed themselves to this new start, there were some rewards. Over the years, times of plenty and hardship have come in cycles and although we sometimes ponder on early decisions, we do have much to be thankful for. Those early settlers had faith, perseverance and determination in plenty and no amount of hardship was to deter them from their goals. It is now only a short time until 2012 when we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of their arrival and we look forward to a great time with the return of many who have connections to this area. A reunion committee has been formed and is keen to hear from people with ideas on events to mark this important milestone. Offers of assistance would also be appreciated. For more information, visit the reunion website at sites.google.com/site/albertlanders or contact the Albertland Museum in Memorial Park, Wellsford, on 423 8181. Albertland Museum is also pleased to advise that they have available for sale postcards of the Matilda Wattenbach, Tyburnia, Hanover and William Miles. |
