Lunching with Mum on Mothers Day? If the weather’s good you might even enjoy an autumn barbecue. I have rich memories of family barbecues. We’d gather on the deck at the bach right here on the Hibiscus Coast.
Is the name of our area, the Hibiscus Coast, just a little bit try-hard? According to Robin Grover’s book Why the Hibiscus?, the name was dreamed up by a group of businessmen in the 1960s to capitalise on the beaches and holiday atmosphere of the Coast. The name officially came into being in 1971. Sure, it’s a pretty label for a place we pretend is slightly sub-tropical and there are 74 local businesses using ‘hibiscus’ in their name.
A hot summer Friday in Orewa. I’m doing errands and chores around town. Tedious. But as I swing into Hillary Square I spot the violin guy outside the Post Office. Great – I love a good busker. As I park and walk over to listen, I’m pleased to see that I’m not the only one.
I’m thinking few teens are eager to start school now that summer’s finally here –unless you’re in Year 9 at Orewa College. If so, you’ll be dead keen, assuming that mum or dad has managed to get you the big new requirement on the stationery list – an iPad2 or similar tablet.
