First Auckland Council meeting

A new era in the history of local government was heralded on 1 November when the new Auckland Council held its inaugural meeting.

Mayor Len Brown and the 20 councillors elected from across Auckland were sworn into office at a major event at Auckland Town Hall.

The event  included performances by Auckland City organist John Wells, the New Zealand Graduate Choir, and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra musicians. The orchestra performed the world premiere of the Fanfare for Auckland, commissioned from APO composer-in-residence John Psathas.
