Stanmore Bay skatepark reopened recently after its $100,000 makeover.
The work, funded by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, included replacing the old wooden quarter pipe and box with a concrete structure.
The wooden ramp was old and required a lot of maintenance.
Skateboarders using the park are getting used to the new quarter pipe, which is lower than the old one, making it a bit harder for skaters to build up speed. However, the skaters spoken to by Hibiscus Matters say the concrete ramp is definitely an improvement.
They also say more is needed; it would make a big difference to users if the rough concrete surface of the whole skatepark could be smoothed. That would make it better to skate on and also less gritty and abrasive to land on.
Local board member Caitlin Watson, a skateboarder herself, says since it reopened, she has noticed that the park is getting good use from young people on skateboards and scooters – from Primary school age to teenagers.
“There are definitely a lot more older skaters using it,” she says.
Caitlin says she hasn’t tried out the facility herself as yet – she is currently on crutches after fracturing her ankle in three places.
“I came off my skateboard after getting “speed wobbles” in Millwater,” she says. She says she will take the skaters’ comments about the surface of the park back to the local board.
