Changing places: SUP Shed

Nik Sams

Nik Sams’ SUP Shed began life almost literally in a shed when it started back in February 2012, operating out of tiny premises in Silverdale.

These days the SUP Shed is more of a SUP warehouse, with Nik’s recent move from the Bakehouse Lane store where he has been for the past 18 months, to a store four times larger at 196 Centreway Road, Orewa.

“Four people filled the shop up in the past, but you can get more than 40 into the new store,” Nik says.

After a busy summer season, Nik moved in last month and immediately began filling the space up with a bigger range than ever before of boards, paddles and accessories.

The move has not only increased the range of stand up paddleboards in the store, but also kites and kite surfing equipment, entry level surfboards, foam boards and body boards.

A wide range of accessories, from Thule and Whisper roof racks to wetsuits and other water wear are available and SUP Shed is also the local stockist of Predator Kontikis.

“We can confidently say we are one of the largest SUP specialist stores in NZ now,” Nik says.

He selects the brands he stocks with care, and always with one eye on the need to suit the local conditions.

He says although stand up paddleboarding is among the fastest growing sports on the planet, in NZ it’s still in its infancy, with huge potential.

Visit any local beach and you’ll find someone on a stand up paddleboard. The amount of people taking up the sport has led Nik to start a social paddling club that any of his customers are free to join, and soon a series of fun racing events will begin in Orewa.

These will kick off later this month and will be open to any stand up paddle boarder of any age or ability.

To keep a relaxed vibe in the store, Nik is also going to have a coffee and cake service and a chill out area where customers can check out all the latest information and relax while watching inspiring action and read through the latest product brochures.

“We want to make shopping at SUP Shed a very unique and enjoyable shopping experience for all, and a place to come, hang out and enjoy what we have to offer.”
