Dancing improves brain power

Organisers of a new Scottish dancing class in Kaiwaka say besides offering lots of fun, the dancing is also great for the brain.

Organiser Elaine Goldthorpe says everyone knows someone meeting the challenges of dementia or Alzheimer’s and, while we may not be able to entirely avoid these problems, we can still make an effort to keep our brain healthy.

To do this, Alzheimer’s NZ recommends trying new things, physical activity, mental activity and social activity.

“Scottish country dancing answers all of these needs,” Elaine says.

Elaine says Scottish  dancing encourages people to change partners and get to know other dancers in groups of six or eight.

“It is quite obviously a physical activity but learning new patterns and movements within each dance provides mental stimulation, too.”

Following the dancing, Elaine says there will be a chance for participants to go out to lunch together and develop friendships.

The classes are held at the Kaiwaka Memorial Hall on Wednesdays from May 30 to July 4 and cost $5 for each session.

Dancers should wear soft-soled, light comfortable shoes.
