Showcase for bookworms

The written word, in all its forms, is the subject of an all-day event happening in Silverdale this month.

The Readers’ and Writers’ Showcase has been organised by Hibiscus Coast Writers Inc and includes a lineup of talks by well-respected authors, as well as a panel discussion with four local and emerging writers.

Project director Marion Duncan says that the programme has been designed to be of interest to keen readers as well as writers.

Included on the bill is fiction writer Owen Marshall: best known for his short stories, Owen recently published a book of poetry. Tessa Duder, who has established an international reputation for books in the Young Adult genre, will focus on her recently completed biographies, offering insights and advice for anyone thinking of writing a memoir.

Local children’s writer and artist Stu Duval will speak about the art of storytelling.

Other forms of writing – from script and songwriting to historical romance and wartime biographies – will be discussed by a panel of emerging writers.

The event includes refreshments, live music and drama.

It will be held on Saturday, June 10 at Kingsway School (Junior Campus), 2 Bonair Crescent, Silverdale from 8.30am to 4pm. Info and tickets from www.hibiscuscoastwriters.weebly.com or at the door.

Inspiring words
Good writing is an art form in itself, but it has leapt off the page and onto a canvas, or even into three dimensions, in an exhibition called Brushed Words that starts this month at Estuary Arts Centre.

Hibiscus Coast Writers’ members supplied around 30 of their original poems and artists then interpreted the ones that inspired them most. Most of the 32 artworks are paintings, but there are also sculptures and pieces made of mosaic and wood. The exhibition will have the poems printed alongside the works.

Brushed Words is on at Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa, June 12–July 2.
