Forest & Bird gives young talent a shot

This shot by Daniel Ashworth, 11 of Gulf Harbour won the Artistic Eye award.

Pest Free Hibiscus Coast’s recent photo competition for children celebrated local birdlife and brought young talent into focus.

It’s the first time this competition has been run – it was coordinated by Forest & Bird’s community hub activator, Andrea Dick.

There were 56 entries from photographers aged 5-12, all in with a chance to win a year’s free membership of Forest & Bird’s Kiwi Conservation Club, a NZ Nature Heroes book or a set of natural watercolour paints. There were also spot prizes.

The five categories were Rare Bird, Artistic Eye, Habitat, Combo Shot and Junior Photographer (best photo from an entrant under 8 years old).

The Rare Bird Award went to Rose Elliot, 10, of Manly who took this photo of a variable oystercatcher, tōrea pango, with a depigmenting condition.

The judges were local bird photographers Donald Snook and Jonathan Mower.

“It is lovely to see people so young knowing what a beautiful image is,” Jonathan said. “You can’t take a great image if you can’t see a beautiful thing in the first place.”

The Habitat Award went to eight-year-old Anushka Sahni and the best Combo Shot was taken by Ava-Rose Todd, 8, of Millwater. A special mention in Artistic Eye went to Julayna Alach aged 12 of Manly; and Emily Couple, 11 years old, and  Eli Austin 9 years old from Red Beach, also received special mentions.

Six-year-old Zoe Mullen of Manly was named Junior Photographer for this image.
