An eco-turf that re-uses plastic and rubber is expected to be laid on Hibiscus Coast Hockey’s grounds in Metro Park East in June.
Hibiscus Hockey Trust chair Merv Huxford says that it’s the first time in the world that this turf has been used for hockey (there are 10 used internationally for football pitches).
Around 46 tonnes of plastic and rubber that would otherwise have been destined for landfill are being re-used in the manufacture of a porous shock pad for the turf, by Tiger Turf.
Hibiscus Hockey has also brought in LED floodlighting that can reduce power consumption by 50 percent compared with metal halide lights.
When the turf is laid, it offers around 125,000 litres of water harvesting capacity.
