Leigh patrol clocks up safety stats

The Leigh Community Patrol is inviting the community to its Annual General Meeting at Leigh Hall on May 31, starting at 3pm.

The event will be an opportunity to reflect on another busy year of volunteer-led community safety initiatives and outline plans for the future.

Since becoming incorporated in October 2021, the patrol has grown into a well-supported community organisation dedicated to helping keep Leigh, and the wider area to Matakana and Pakiri, safe and connected.

Organisers say the visible presence of local volunteers has helped reassure residents and strengthen ties within the community.

The patrol currently has 95 active members, including 36 trained patrollers and 59 associate members, and is inviting others of all ages to get involved.

“All patrollers are fully trained and police vetted,” the group said, adding that it would particularly like to see some new faces joining the patrol team.

Over the past five years, volunteers have contributed substantial time and effort
to the community.

Annual averages since the patrol was formed include 216 patrols each year, more than 800 volunteer patrol hours, nearly 10,000 kilometres patrolled, and over 220 hours of training every year.

Community support has also played a major role in the patrol’s success. Donations for the past financial year totalled $26,431, including contributions from members and strong backing from the wider public.

The patrol acknowledged the ongoing support of several local businesses and individuals, including Lee Fish, ITM, Hicks Construction, Anglican Parish Warkworth, Z Warkworth, and Peter Scott, who provides free use of the patrol’s headquarters in central Leigh.

Organisers say the AGM will provide further insight into patrol activities over the past year, including assistance provided to residents and emergency service callouts.

“Our volunteers are dedicated to helping keep this special community safe and connected,” patroller Stuart Henderson said.
