New riding trail opened

North Shore Riding for the Disabled (NSRDA), based in Stillwater, held a special event on Friday, March 11, when it officially opened a Sensory Trail for riders.

The ribbon-cutting duties were handled by Simon Watts MP for North Shore and attended by Auckland Councillor John Watson, two members of the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, and New Zealand Riding for the Disabled board member Sally Wenley.

The sensory trail in Stillwater was opened by Tim Lofts and MP Simon Watts. It has been a long-standing project for North Shore Riding for the Disabled and will encourage riders to interact with the world around them.

About 40 people attended the ceremony, including past and present trustees of North Shore RDA Charitable Trust and a number of the volunteers who give their time to help NSRDA to deliver its therapeutic riding programmes.

There were a couple of short speeches and an inaugural ride over the new trail by a small group of riders, followed by morning tea.

NSRDA president Tim Lofts said the construction of this new trail, created in what was just an area of overgrown bush, had taken a number of years to complete.

“Our thanks go to the many involved, both from our own volunteers and also a number of external sources and suppliers, to deliver this great new facility to stimulate and involve our riders and for them to enjoy for many years to come,” Lofts said.
