Ōrewa toilets targeted

The toilets in Western Reserve Ōrewa were damaged overnight on February 9, with the sanitary bin reportedly upended and human excrement smeared on the walls.

Council’s acting head of area operations, Sarah Jones, says repairs are expected to be less than $1000 and can be done as part of the existing maintenance contract.

She says the biggest impact would be on the cleaning schedule, affecting service levels at the other toilet blocks in the area. “At this time, there have been no decisions made to lock the public toilets in Ōrewa overnight.

This is usually done as a last resort as it increases costs and limits use to people who need them after hours.

It would be a decision that would be made in conjunction with the Local Board,” Jones says.
