Sand sculptors back in Ōrewa

In Good Form from Christchurch chose the America’s Cup as the theme for last year’s giant sand sculpture on Moana Reserve.

The red traffic light setting will not prevent Christchurch’s In Good Form sand sculptors from demonstrating their skills in Ōrewa this month.

Although the sandcastle competition on Ōrewa Beach is not possible because of Covid-19 event restrictions, 20 tonnes of sand will still be trucked into Moana Reserve so that In Good Form can create a giant sculpture.

This is the eighth year that the sand sculpting has taken place on the reserve.

The sculptors will begin work on Monday, February 28 and should be finished (weather permitting) by the following weekend, March 5),when the final piece will be revealed.

Organiser of the sculpting, Hellen Wilkins of Destination Ōrewa Beach, says the activity is possible as although people stop to watch the sculpting while the work is being built, the crowd numbers never exceed the maximum gathering numbers allowed at one time.
