60 year union celebrated

Ōrewa couple Barbara and Brian Hines consider themselves very fortunate to have got their 60th wedding anniversary celebrations in just before the latest level 3 lockdown.

Barbara says on Sunday, February 14 around 100 people came to a party at their church, St John the Evangelist in Centreway Road, after a special blessing at Mass.

“It was a beautiful day,” she says.

The couple met at Auckland Hospital, where Brian was an oncology radiographer and Barbara worked as a medical secretary. Barbara was just 19 and Brian 27 when they married at St Michael’s church in Remuera, Auckland on February 11, 1961.

They have eight children, 33 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The pair have a strong Christian faith and as well as the local celebrations to mark the occasion, Barbara says they lit a candle and said a prayer at St Michael’s.
