This bike rack is at the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal. Provision of a far more modest cycle rack at Gulf Harbour Reserve has so far taken more than a year to make its way through Auckland Transport’s bureaucracy.
How long does it take to get a bike rack installed in a public place?
This was the question raised by Hibiscus & Bays Local Board member Caitlin Watson at a recent meeting – and, according to a report by Auckland Transport (AT), the answer could be more than a year.
The local board asked AT to put bike racks in Gulf Harbour Reserve back in February last year, for use by ferry passengers. At the time, AT advised that the location had been added to its ‘Bike Parking Candidate Register’.
Entries on this register were to be considered as part of developing a 2016/17 Bike Parking programme.
Not a lot has happened since then which Caitlin says is very frustrating.
“Frankly, it’s an inexpensive essential that should be easy to put in place,” Caitlin says. “It’s been made into a big deal by AT but it’s just a simple bike rack. Bike racks are an integral part of a public transport system, which AT is supposed to prioritise. It’s especially needed in Gulf Harbour, where the car park is full to overflowing, because it gives people other options than driving to catch the ferry.”
At a meeting two months ago, the local board requested an update on the timing of installation. This was referred to AT’s Walking and Cycling division. No information has yet come back to the local board.
