Fire closes part of Orewa

A fire that broke out in the roof of a commercial premise off Moana Avenue in Orewa this morning is believed to be now under control.

An alarm was raised at 9.33am when smoke was seen billowing from the roof.

Silverdale and Albany brigades were the first on the scene, soon backed up by a second crew from Silverdale, and crews from Manly, East Coast Bays and a turntable ladder appliance from Auckland city.

Silverdale senior station officer Jim Maclean says the area between Bakehouse Lane and Keith Morris Lane is likely to be blocked for the rest of the morning.

He says the fire threatened about 14 businesses, but was contained by a firewall in the roof void.

The fire was centred over Orewa Bakery.

Bakery owners Anna and Ty Ling say they were cooking as normal when they heard a noise above them.

“We looked up and saw smoke and ran out of the shop,” they said.

A neighbouring business owner also saw the smoke and called 111.
