Hoop selected by popular vote

Hibiscus & Bays Local Board members went against the recommendation of Auckland Council staff in choosing new basketball hoops for Orewa Reserve.

The staff’s preferred option was the Playground People’s Platinum Play Hoop, at a cost of $14,305, which is NZ made in hot dipped galvanized steel and offers a 25-year warranty.

Initially the local board agreed with staff, but at its meeting on October 17, members Caitlin Watson, Vicki Watson and David Cooper said their preference was for the $10,429 Airtime Hoop. This is made in China, and Council’s investigation and design team portfolio coordinator, Paul Durling, told the board that the seaside location means that this version has a warranty of only five years.

Member Caitlin Watson said that locals on social media showed a strong preference for the appearance and cheaper cost of the Airtime Hoop.

The board then voted unanimously to change its mind and choose the cheaper hoop and asked for installation as a matter of urgency. Council’s report to the local board suggests that work could start within six weeks.

The installation of the new hoops will be accompanied by a full renewal of the court surface.
