Jesters’ waste no joke

Waste fat stored outside a Silverdale pie manufacturing premises has caused a headache for local residents.

William Joyce lives behind the Jesters Pies’ factory in Anvil Road and said vessels containing waste fat were left outside until the smell from them was unbearable.

“Our flat fronts onto the back of the factory and there are containers down there where they store waste fat,” he said. “It absolutely stinks, especially in hot weather.”

Joyce said the situation had been going on for a long time and neighbours had also mentioned the bad smell to him, but despite reporting it to Auckland Council twice, nothing had changed.

Council team leader for compliance Paul Northover confirmed that a complaint about the smell of fat and other contaminates from the factory had been received.

“The business owner has been contacted and asked to undertake measures that will remedy the issue at the earliest convenience. Our compliance officers will be following up to ensure this has been done,” he said.

“We have also spoken with the complainant to let them know the outcome of their report.”

Jesters Pies was contacted for comment, but no response was received.
