Lookout gets safety barriers

Safety improvements are to be made to Orewa Lookout.

Changes to the North Orewa lookout platform to make it more secure are being considered by Auckland Council’s parks department.

The work will be undertaken after two deaths in recent months – in both cases, the deceased were found beneath the cliff at the northern end of Orewa Beach.

Council’s local and sports parks – north manager, Martin van Jaarsveld, says that the structure, which was built by Orewa Lions volunteers almost 30 years ago (in 1986), at the request of the former Rodney District Council, has stood the test of time and meets Council’s safety obligations under the Building Act.

However, he says Council is proactively looking at options to make it harder for people to access the cliff edge via the platform and associated cliff barriers.

The work will be funded by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board and should be undertaken over the next two months.
