Whangaparaoa School celebrated Matariki with a festival of cultural performances on June 13.

Taking the stage were the school’s senior Kapa Haka group, as well as a group of around 50 Hibiscus Tuakana juniors, and senior Tuakana members from Whangaparaoa College who presented a variety of Pacific Islands’ song and dances.

Hibiscus Tuakana’s Marina Vaha says the group jumped at the opportunity to perform to support Matariki.

The lively and colourful show included poi and was accompanied by ukulele, guitar and Tuakana’s drums.

It was the finale in a week of Matariki celebrations at the primary school, which included a chance to try flax weaving and learn a haka.
