Netflix films in Waiwera

The derelict interior of Waiwera Thermal Resort will become a set for the international cast of Netflix production Cowboy Bebop next week.

Waiwera residents received a letter recently advising of the timing of the filming, by Intergalactic Productions.

The production is a live-action adaptation of a cult Japanese animated series. The Science Fiction story is about bounty hunters chasing “the galaxy’s most dangerous criminals” and Hibiscus Matters understands the abandoned Waiwera site is considered an ideal “apocalyptic” backdrop.

The cast includes John Cho, Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda.

Covid-19 put a halt to production, but eventually border exemptions were granted by the Government for the crew, who quarantined for two weeks before re-starting filming in September.

The show is expected to premiere next year, at the earliest.
