Orewa seawall takes next step

The Hibiscus & Bays Local Board gave approval to the draft design for a seawall on Orewa Beach, from Kohu St to Marine View, last month.

Council staff say that the design was refined after informal consultation with the community which began towards the end of last year.

Changes include two additional stairways to the beach for adjacent property owners and a reduction in planted areas on top of the wall to reduce its width.

The aim of the structure is to retain the width of the reserve, which has been substantially eroded. At the local board meeting, on June 15, coastal management services team manager Paul Klinac said that funding for the building of the wall will depend on where the project is placed on a list of Auckland’s coastal work priorities; that list is currently being worked out, and Mr Klinac said that Orewa Beach was expected to be right at the top.

Funding decisions are ultimately up to the Council’s Finance & Performance Committee. Following the local board’s approval, a resource consent application is expected to be lodged for the project in September.

It will be publicly notified.
