Steps taken to fix stairs

The stairs down to the beach in Pacific Parade, Army Bay, which are unsafe while awaiting repairs, (HM March 3) are to be fixed next month, at a total cost in the vicinity of $490,000.

The stairs have been out of action for several years. Over the last decade they have been smashed by storms – these effects on coastal infrastructure are an increasing concern with climate change.

Cr John Watson says that repair work was due to take place last year, but was affected by Covid-19 lockdowns and budget cuts.

Work to fix the Pacific Parade steps is currently scheduled to start next month. It will involve installing chain link fence to secure the boulders on the cliff as well as replacing the damaged staircase with a new one. There will also be some planting around the top of the cliff.

The staircase will be constructed off site, and take eight weeks to complete.

Planning and design is complete and the contractor has ordered the materials.

Work at the site is expected to begin in the second week of April, and entire works will be completed in mid-May (weather permitting).
