Summer set net monitoring beginning on Coast again

Auckland Council will monitor set netting activities at Hatfields Beach and Matakatia Bay over the summer period.

The monitoring period is from December 20 to March 31.

Last summer Hatfields Beach was monitored for set netting, and a small number of complaints were received.

However, during that time there were 10 complaints related to Matakatia (including one that reported on activities taking place over seven days), which is why Council’s attention has turned to that beach this summer season.

Set netting, which entails placing nets in the water with anchors or weights and surface floats, is a legal activity, but can cause safety issues for other beach users, including swimmers and boaties.

Under the Public Safety & Nuisance bylaw Council can impose restrictions on the practice, where evidence exists of a threat to public safety and/or nuisance. The monitoring period is to gather information about the issue and results from concerns raised by residents and local boards.

Residents who wish to comment or voice concerns about set-netting activities that are causing a nuisance in those areas can contact Auckland Council by email on setnet@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. Any photos sent need to be recent and preferably time-stamped.

Set net ban at Shakespear

The seasonal set net ban at Army Bay and Te Haruhi Bay in Shakespear Regional Park, which was put in place for the first time last summer, will now apply every summer, from December 20 to March 31. Set netting is banned at those beaches but is still allowed at Okoromai Bay.
