Around 40 tyres were dumped in a reserve in Silverdale last month, and a local environmentalist who is undertaking pest control in the area suspects it is a repeat offender.
The Oxbow Reserve, at 32-36 Hibiscus Coast Highway, runs from the highway over- bridge at Silverdale towards Pak ‘n’ Save.
Environmental volunteer Vern Rule, who alerted Auckland Council to the most recent incident, says it is at least the fourth time that quantities of tyres have been dumped there.
Vern says he supplied Auckland Council with photos of a suspected offender taken by an infrared camera, including the vehicle’s registration number.
That was a year ago. He says it would also have been good to see Auckland Transport (AT) follow up on a request made at that time for an additional bollard on the highway to prevent vehicle access to the reserve.
Council’s waste contracts and compliance manager, Warwick Jaine, says Council has not seen evidence of illegal dumping but is aware of the problem and investigating.
“We are also in discussions with AT about installing additional bollards in an effort to prevent vehicles being able to drive into the reserve to dump rubbish,” he says.
“We want to thank the person who brought this incident to our attention. We are appealing to the public for assistance if they see anything suspicious.”
People who see illegal dumping should contact Council immediately with as much information as possible, including times and dates, descriptions of the offenders, and if known, a vehicle registration.
All witness reports of illegal dumping are treated confidentially. People can report dumped material on 09 301 0101, or 0800 NO DUMP, which operates 24/7. Offenders can face fines up to $30,000.
