Beverage businesses bubbling

Local beverage makers have managed to keep businesses ticking over thanks to an upswing of mail orders during the Covid-19 quarantine.

Matakana Moonshine’s online retailer had to temporarily close sales to catch up with demand, but is set to resume from tomorrow (April 9).

Hawker-in-chief Mark Hobin says despite the loss of bar sales of its homemade hooch, the online business should get him through the lockdown.

“Our retailer Whiskey and More is ordering cases every day at the moment,” Mark says.

Their full range, including their flagship amber lighting southern style , can be purchased at matakanamoonshine.co.nz

Puhoi Organic Distillery is also registered with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise (MBIE) as an essential producer.

Alex’s wife Dr Iryna Kirichuk MD has produced a special food-grade alcohol sanitizer specially for the quarantine.

Luxury versions of the product with either manuka, aloe vera or propolis are also available as gift sets.

Alex is hoping to retail them in Smith and Caughey’s department store in Auckland when restrictions are lifted.

In the meantime, their range of private labels including wasabi vodka and blueblood gin are available for online purchase at spirits.net.nz

Purchase has been temporarily restricted to three bottles per purchase to comply with MBIE rules.

For orders made by residents local to Puhoi, Alex is providing express delivery by hand to their letter boxes while orders further afield are sent by courier.

Sawmill Brewery is currently offering free residential delivery and $10 rural delivery for beer ordered on its website.

Orders typically arrive within three working days, but due to a pre-Easter rush, orders made before the weekend will not be delivered until after next Tuesday (April 14).

Meanwhile, Rush Coffee owner Hadyen Prujean says the business has begun delivering coffee again this week after being temporarily halted by MBIE.

He says mail and supermarket orders are up by around 50 per cent as compared to normal business before the lockdown.

“Locals who normally buy their coffee at the market or in cafes have been quick to get their mail orders in,” he says.

He says his main concern is for cafés in the area which may struggle to get up and running once the lockdown ends and he will prioritise shipments of fresh coffee to them.
