Exhibition draws large crowd

Lillian Fromont won the People’s Choice Award with this painting, which was one of two from the series ‘te wairua o te whenua’.

Junior coaching, court maintenance and clubroom improvements will benefit from the $15,000 raised by the Mahurangi East Tennis Club through its Great Summer Art Exhibition last month.

About 180 entries were displayed, slightly down on last year, as there were no entries from Mahurangi College students due to Covid 19 disruptions last year.

Club president Don Wishart says the three-day exhibition was well attended throughout, especially on the opening night.

“Visitors and artists were very complimentary about the high standard of both the artwork and the running of the exhibition,” he says.

“The funds raised for the tennis club were up on last year by about $1500.”

Warkworth artist Lillian Fromont won the People’s Choice Award with a painting inspired by the Catchpool Valley track. Other winners were: novice,  Caroline Bell; intermediate,  Ricci Bray; professional, Miki Nozomi; and photography, Rhana Panhuis.

The club thanked its sponsors, including major sponsor Bayleys, the artists and the community for its support.

“We were grateful that we were able to forge ahead with the exhibition always knowing that we might have to pull the plug at short notice if Covid-19 flared up again,” Don says.
