Local firefighters aid Australians

Two local volunteer fire officers are among a contingent of 21 NZ firefighters deployed to to Australia last week to help battle the bushfires in Queensland and New South Wales.

Kawau Rural Voluntary Fire Service  chief fire officer Gavin Brunton and Puhoi Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Mike Donovan headed over the Tasman on Tuesday, November 12, just as catastrophic fire conditions were being experienced on Australia’s east coast.

Both men have joined similar overseas deployments in the past, including one to British Columbia on Canada’s west coast in 2017.

A Fire & Emergency NZ spokesman said the group would stay on the ground assisting Australian firefighters for 13 days.
