A Matakana property has won the best living room category in NZ House & Garden magazine’s Interior of the Year awards.

Judges praised Cathy Gould’s Takatu Road home – which she describes as an ‘urban barn’ – for her choice of materials, describing them as “authentically and rustically textured”, and for creating a charming and unique space.
Cathy and her husband, Roger Donald, built the house four years ago, working with Warkworth architectural designer Martin Harnish and Omaha Builders’ Grant Sutherland.

“We started with a bare paddock and built it from scratch,” she says.

“It took a year to design and then about 18 months to build. It was a real team effort. We used all local tradesmen and I can highly recommend them all.”

Before moving to Takatu Road, Cathy and Roger had a home at Omaha Beach and split their time between there and Auckland, but they will be moving permanently to their Matakana property in January.

Locals wanting to take a look at the award-winning living room – not to mention their bedroom, which was highly commended in the same awards – will have the chance to tour this and several other Matakana and Omaha homes when they open their doors for a NZ House & Garden House Tour on March 4 next year.
