Our Patch – Wellsford: Past tense

  • Local tradition suggests the name Wellsford was an acronym based on the family names of the first settlers. These were the families of Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble.
  • Early settlers arrived from Britain in the 1860s. They were a breakaway group of non-conformists from the Anglican Church, and named themselves the Albertlanders after Queens Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert.
  • The Albertlanders first established themselves at Port Albert on the Kaipara Coast, 10 kilometres west of Wellsford. The majority of them subsequently moved inland, to more fertile areas in the region, and as a result, Wellsford was founded.
