Queues form at checkpoints

Long queues have formed at a police checkpoint on State Highway 1, just north of Te Hana.

Police have set-up nine checkpoints on Auckland’s southern and northern boundaries in response to the Level 3 lockdown, which came into force at midday today (Wednesday).

Northbound traffic is bumper-to-bumper from Wellsford to the checkpoint, which is at the intersection of SH1 and the road to Mangawhai (the Twin Coast Highway).

Police appeared relaxed about allowing vehicles through the checkpoint with few being turned around. Officers were mainly asking drivers their reason for travelling across the regional boundary.

Commercial vehicles were being waived through without delay.

The four checkpoints on the Auckland-Northland boundary are SH1 just north of Te Hana, and along the Twin Coast Highway into Mangawhai near Ryan Road, Cames Road north of Coal Hill Road, and Black Swamp Road.

Local police have been briefed that the defence force may be brought in to help maintain the checkpoints.
