Mahurangi Matters Tossi columnist Jackie Russell snapped this picture of royal spoonbills (kōtuku ngutupapa) at Snells Beach earlier this month.
The birds are known to visit the area now and again, but sightings are rare.
Spoonbills only recently established themselves in New Zealand after flying across the Tasman, independent of any human input.
