Wellsford resident Tony Lentino died at his home at Spring Hill Station on Monday following a battle with cancer, aged 42.

Mr Lentino owned the Super Black V8 Supercar racing team, which raced with the Wellsford brand on the car.

The team supported an emergency services recruitment drive in Wellsford last year.

Team manager Greg Hahn paid tribute to Mr Lentino.

“Tony had a dream and took us all on the journey with him. He always wanted for a Pole (position) and a top ten finish, and this weekend he got to see it. He will be deeply missed,” Mr Hahn told Stuff.co.nz

Mr Lentino started the Wellsford based team to give Kiwi drivers a chance to race in the Australia Supercars V8 Championship.

He is survived by his wife Emily and daughters Izabella and Sofia.
