Whangateau search continues

A police search and rescue team is back at Whangateau today as the search continues for Maree Wilkins, 84, who has been missing from a rest home on Leigh Road since 8pm on Tuesday.

Senior Sergeant Steven Pivac says yesterday’s search failed to find any trace of Maree.

“We will continue to search over a five-kilometre radius of the rest home for as long as light allows today and then make a review and assessment tomorrow,” he says.

The Eagle helicopter made a sweep of the harbour and mangroves early this morning, and Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving Club volunteers helped search coastal waterways yesterday. Other officers have concentrated on the land search.

Sen. Sgt Pivac says police have not discounted the possibility that Maree has found her way to some form of transport and left the area, but “we see this as unlikely”.

The missing woman is described as being five feet tall (150cm) and frail. She was last seen wearing dark trousers and a multi-coloured top, and she could be wearing gumboots.

If anyone sees Maree they are asked to contact Rodney Police immediately on 09 426 4555.
