Good sportsmanship was the key to seven-year-old Kellan Turrell of Manly winning the opportunity to represent the Raiders at the NZ Warriors last home game of the season.
Kellan, who goes to Stanmore Bay School, was chosen out of all the teams, U7–U16, for the club’s Best and Fairest Player award after his coaches sang his praises.
Coaches Beccs Hini and Mark Maloney said that Kellan, who is in his second season with the Raiders, displays the Warriors values such as humility, loyalty, courage and passion for the game as well as being a naturally gifted player.
At the game at Mt Smart Stadium on August 27, Kellan and his father Greg received a season ticket to next year’s games and a bag of Warriors merchandise. Kellan lined up on the pitch before the game with other young players to receive his medal.
His mother Rachelle says although he loves playing rugby league, Kellan wasn’t a big fan of watching it on TV or going to games but that match, which the Warriors lost to the Manly Sea Eagles, 22–21 in golden point, has changed all that.
“Both him and his brother Rylan are big fans now,” she says. “We are so proud of Kellan and would like to thank the coaches who have given so much to the boys this season.”
