Puhoi to have say on speed limit

The speed limit on State Highway 1 is under review, and Puhoi residents are invited to share their thoughts either online, or at a drop-in session at the Puhoi Centennial Hall on Sunday October 20, from 10am to 12pm.

The New Zealand Transport Agency are considering reducing the speed limit from Warkworth to Puhoi from 100km/h to 80km/h. The change will only increase travel time by around 10 seconds, NZTA director of regional relationships Steve Mutton says.

Reducing the speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h from State Highway 1 lower Phillips Rd to Kaipara Flats Rd is also being considered.

“We want to make the roads safer for everyone who uses them,” Mr Mutton says.

“Speed increases both the likelihood of crashes and the severity of crashes when they happen. Most crashes are caused by a number of factors, but speed is the most likely to determine whether anyone is killed, injured, or walks away unharmed.”

New Zealand’s highest risk state highways are under review as part of NZTAs Safe Network Programme.

“Locals know their roads, so we want to hear what you think about the current speed limits and proposed changes,” a NZTA statement says.
